ANNE VAN GOETHEM has held various senior positions in European affairs for more than twenty years. Since 1999, she has been working as advisor for economic questions at the Permanent Representation of Luxembourg to the EU. Anne can draw on a vast experience in relations with EU institutions, national governments and stakeholder organisations.
In her day to day work, she is involved in negotiations regarding various policy areas, such as internal market, competition, industry and consumer protection and represents the Luxembourg government in Council working parties and other EU meetings. During the Luxembourg Presidency of the EU she has chaired Council working groups (including the negotiations on the Services Directive) and EU coordination meetings in the margins of international negotiations, and has represented the Council in European Parliament’s Committee meetings. Designing arguments, persuading colleagues, counterparts and stakeholders, evaluating situations and defining compromises on technical and political issues are part of her daily work.
Prior to her current position, Anne was an executive manager in an industry lobbying group and a consultant in EU affairs. She has started her carrier in working for six years as an independent journalist specialised in EU affairs.
Anne graduated from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) with a degree in political science (international relations). She holds a postgraduate degree in international law and a postgraduate degree in environmental management, from the same university. She has published a number of academic and professional papers on several topics related to EU policy.
